Charles Butler Obituary

Charles Richard Butler was born August 27, 1941, to Charles Butler and Mattie E. (Butler, Gillispie) Majors.

He retired from General Motor after 30 years of service and in his retired life, worked at Enterprise Car Rental. He spent many years raising funds for kids to receive scholarships for books while attending college.  Charles was a former deacon at Valley of Peace Missionary Baptist Church, Salem Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church and Freedom Hill Baptist Church and lastly Sunlight Baptist Church. He also provided dinner to those in need during the holidays, and managed gospel groups such as Voices of Peace and The Gospel Gems.

He was also a former member of the Mt. Calvary Lodge Number 54 where he was a 33rd Degreed Mason. To know him was to love him, as he always provided you with a good laugh or sharing the word of God.

But God had better plans; Charles went home to be with the Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 31, 2024, at the age of 82. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles (Alice) Butler and Mattie Majors; two sons, Charles Richard Butler, Jr. and Samual Butler; one daughter, Carla Jett; one brother, Charles Butler; one sister, Shirley Davis and brother in-law, Robert Herring.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Johnson Butler; daughters, Venita (George) Butler O'Bannon, Melissa Butler, Dee Dee Burden, Corla (Jeff) Lampkins, Pauline (Shawn) Wilson and Tajuana Taylor; sons, Patrick Butler, Timothy Byers, Christopher (Chavonne) Hodge and Chad Page; five sisters, Mary Louise Lay-Neloms, Frances Herring of Dayton, Ohio, Terilyn (Butler) Dortch, Wilda (Jerry) Greathouse and Margo (Michael) Jospeh of Indianapolis, Indiana; brother-in-love/friend, Eddie Gregory (Bernadine) of Dayton; grandchildren, Donovan (Ashley) Butler, Brooks (Rosa) O'Bannon, Genesis Butler, Frisco (Dottie) O'Bannon and Risa O'Bannon, d'Arco Christian, Robert McGriff, Jr, JeBari (Tiana) Taylor of Louisville, Kentucky, Christopher Hodge, Jr., Le'Bril Lynch and Sukara Hodge; several special nieces and nephews, and several great-grandchildren; special longtime friends, Gunnie, Art London, and DJ More, Rev.
